Footage shows lines of cars snaking outside petrol stations, with motorists waiting for their turn to refuel.

For local resident Mirza Ibrahim Hamo, the situation has become a 'disaster', with drivers spending much of the day waiting for fuel.

"We leave at 4:00, and by 15:00 we have managed to fill up around 40 litres of gasoline. Many problems arise, such as taxi drivers being unable to work. Honestly, it's a disaster, he explained.

Fellow taxi driver Michael Khalil said operators were struggling to cover their costs and urged the Iraqi government to increase fuel allocations.

"As taxi drivers, we cannot afford the cost of operating our taxis, and we call on the Iraqi government to increase the gasoline allocation for the people of Nineveh," he said.

On October 6, Iraq's Parliamentary Integrity Committee discussed the fuel crisis gripping several governorates, focusing on shortages in Nineveh and measures to ensure the province receives its allocated supplies.

Officials reportedly examined challenges linked to Nineveh's proximity to the Kurdistan Region, including fuel price differences and the movement of petroleum products between areas.

The committee also reviewed plans to bolster strategic reserves and tighten electronic monitoring of fuel distribution and transportation to tackle manipulation and smuggling. It called for action to address the shortages and stabilise supplies.

Several Iraqi governorates, including Nineveh and Baghdad, have been hit by petrol shortages, leaving motorists facing lengthy queues at filling stations.

Authorities have blamed the crisis on shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, rising domestic consumption, depleted reserves and fuel import difficulties linked to the US-Iran war."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
Long road home - Over 500 displaced families leave Al-Hasakah's Washokani Camp in fourth convoy returning to Ras al-Ain

Long road home - Over 500 displaced families leave Al-Hasakah's Washokani Camp in fourth convoy returning to Ras al-Ain

"Hundreds of Syrian families displaced by years of conflict departed Washokani camp in Hasakah on Thursday, heading back to Ras al-Ayn and its countryside as part of a voluntary return programme.
Footage shows trucks loaded with furniture and household belongings lined up inside the camp, with residents waiting to depart. A woman and children can also be seen sitting on top of furniture piled onto a small truck, before the convoy leaves the camp and travels along the Hasakah-Aleppo international road.
"We are returning to Ras al-Ayn. Of course, we are happy and glad, but we are going back to destruction. Our homes are completely destroyed and we have nothing. We hope the new government will look into the situation of the displaced people from Ras al-Ayn and support them." said returning resident Yassin Al-Hamad.
"We are taking our tent with us so we can set it up because our homes have been destroyed and levelled to the ground. [...] Our students have been left without education. We want schools for the children, and we hope doctors and services will be provided.," added displaced resident Sana Azzo.
According to Syria's official news agency SANA, the fourth batch of returnees includes 518 families heading back to their areas of origin.
Three previous convoys have departed since August, carrying 413, 700 and 520 families respectively, bringing the reported total to more than 2,150 families out of approximately 12,000 displaced families in Hasakah province.
Earlier this year, Syria's transitional government launched an initiative titled 'Syria Without Camps' under a presidential decree, with plans to close displacement camps and facilitate the return of displaced families."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
'Rubio is actually right' - Russia's Peskov agrees with US State Sec on lack of prospects for diplomatic settlement in Ukraine

'Rubio is actually right' - Russia's Peskov agrees with US State Sec on lack of prospects for diplomatic settlement in Ukraine

"*TO FOLLOW*"

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
'We must learn to work together!' - CIS and SCO hold final stage of 'Eurasia-Antiterror' exercises in Minsk

'We must learn to work together!' - CIS and SCO hold final stage of 'Eurasia-Antiterror' exercises in Minsk

"*TO FOLLOW*"

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
Wishing prosperity for you and your country... a FRIENDLY country! - Iran's Pezeshkian congratulates Putin on his birthday at Turkmenistan talks

Wishing prosperity for you and your country... a FRIENDLY country! - Iran's Pezeshkian congratulates Putin on his birthday at Turkmenistan talks

"*TO FOLLOW*"

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
Displaced and desperate - Hundreds left homeless by Campi Flegrei earthquakes protest in Rome demanding govt support

Displaced and desperate - Hundreds left homeless by Campi Flegrei earthquakes protest in Rome demanding govt support

"Hundreds of residents displaced by earthquakes near Naples took to the streets of Rome on Thursday, demanding emergency housing, reconstruction funds and greater government support.
Footage shows protesters marching near the Colosseum, carrying banners reading 'Campi Flegrei, united in the struggle' and placards demanding housing for displaced residents. Demonstrators are seen chanting, singing and beating drums, while police block a street along the protest route.
Around 700 protesters, joined by mayors from four municipalities in the Campi Flegrei volcanic region, marched towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office, but were stopped by a police cordon at Piazza Santi Apostoli before reaching the government headquarters.
"There are over 6,000 people displaced from their homes. Right now, there are unbelievable situations we are dealing with. The government needs to establish a serious commitment and a decisive change of pace compared to the Campi Flegrei decrees enacted so far, which are insufficient and have effectively left hundreds and thousands of people out on the street," one protester said.
The march followed a powerful magnitude 4.7 earthquake on July 31 that deepened the housing crisis in Campi Flegrei, a volcanic area west of Naples. Repeated tremors and ground movement, known as bradyseism, damaged buildings and forced residents from their homes.
Protest organisers are demanding a special law to secure long-term funding, support local businesses and set clear deadlines for reconstruction.
A delegation of four mayors and two residents' representatives was later received at Rome's prefecture, where they presented proposals for a new government decree.
"If the Region together with the Government have identified demolition and reconstruction as the most cost-effective solution, this must be done on-site. We will not accept the deportation of part of the population outside the central area of Pozzuoli," another protester said.
Local mayors also called for talks with the government, arguing that existing emergency measures have failed to tackle the scale of the housing crisis.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the government could bring a new decree before the Council of Ministers as early as Tuesday, with measures previously left out of emergency legislation expected to be reconsidered. But residents are demanding firm funding commitments."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
Students STORM the Bastille - Paris landmark turns battleground as police clash with protesters demanding better schools

Students STORM the Bastille - Paris landmark turns battleground as police clash with protesters demanding better schools

"Police charged at student protesters with batons as demonstrations over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and underfunded schools erupted into violent clashes at Paris's iconic Place de la Bastille on Thursday.
Footage shows officers swinging batons and firing water cannons at protesters, as smoke flares and other objects fly through the air. Demonstrators are later seen carrying an injured person towards an ambulance.
The violence is the latest flashpoint in a wave of student protests sweeping France since September, with teenagers demanding more teachers, smaller classes and urgent repairs to crumbling school buildings.
The unrest has disrupted hundreds of schools. According to the Education Ministry, classes were fully or partially suspended at 375 schools on Thursday morning alone.
The demonstrations have also sparked accusations of excessive police force, particularly against minors, following a series of violent confrontations.
On Monday, a 15-year-old boy lost his hand when a police stun grenade exploded during clashes in the northern city of Lens. The exact circumstances remain under investigation.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez ordered stun grenades to be temporarily withdrawn from student demonstrations on Wednesday, pending clarification of the incident.
Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has promised to announce the government's first decisions on students' demands by the end of October, but has yet to unveil concrete measures to address their grievances."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
'Putin will NOT strike Bulgaria... I GUARANTEE!' - Ex-PM Borisov insists gas pipeline protects country after Black Sea drone attacks

"Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov claimed on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not attack Bulgaria as long as the Balkan Stream gas pipeline remains operational, following drone attacks on two commercial ships in Bulgaria's Black Sea exclusive economic zone on Tuesday.
Borisov argued that Balkan Stream, which carries Russian gas through Bulgaria, protects the country from Russian military action.
"When I built Balkan Stream, I told all Bulgarians that wherever there are gas pipelines, there will be no war," he said.
"I can guarantee that as long as Balkan Stream is operational, President Putin will not strike Bulgaria. That I can guarantee," he continued.
Turning to the attacks, Borisov questioned the movements of one of the vessels, claiming it had taken 15 days to travel from Egypt towards Ukraine, rather than the expected five.
"According to intelligence reports, they were transporting people or troops. Whether that is true or not, that is why everyone agreed to request an underwater drone to go and inspect it," Borisov said.
Bulgarian authorities have reportedly requested international assistance to inspect one of the vessels, which sank following the attack. Responsibility for the drone strikes has yet to be established.
Borisov served three terms as Bulgaria's prime minister, from 2009 to 2013, 2014 to 2017 and 2017 to 2021. He remains a prominent figure in Bulgarian politics as leader of the GERB party.
Balkan Stream, the Bulgarian extension of the TurkStream gas route, was completed in December 2020 under Borisov's government, with gas deliveries to Serbia beginning in January 2021."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
'Our modern-day Thomas Edison!' - Trump's praise for Elon Musk as he honours six science and technology leaders

'Our modern-day Thomas Edison!' - Trump's praise for Elon Musk as he honours six science and technology leaders

"US President Donald Trump showered praise on Elon Musk, calling him a 'national treasure' and a modern-day Thomas Edison as he honoured six leading figures in science and technology at a ceremony in Washington DC, on Thursday.

"There's nobody like him. Few Americans in history have done more to advance America's national interest than Elon. In one field after another, his genius and determination have made science fiction into reality," Trump said at the New Golden Age Summit.

Trump credited the SpaceX founder with transforming space exploration, advancing artificial intelligence and strengthening America's technological leadership.

"Elon is our modern-day Thomas Edison, and Elon, I want to congratulate you. You're my friend and all of that, but you are a very, very special guy. Thank you very much, and congratulations, Elon. Great job," he added.

Trump pointed to Musk's decision to establish SpaceX in 2002, saying the company had overcome extraordinary odds to develop reusable rockets and reduce NASA's dependence on foreign spacecraft.

He also congratulated SpaceX on the safe return of its Crew-12 mission from the International Space Station earlier on Thursday. The four astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off California after nearly eight months in space.

"Congratulations. Wow. [...] Could you imagine if things didn't work out so well? It would be not a very happy moment. I wonder if he'd be here. I think he might not be here. But it always works out well for Elon, right?" The president joked.

Musk was among six technology leaders receiving the country's highest national honours for scientific and technological achievement.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and AMD chief executive Lisa Su also received the National Medal of Science. Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell and Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella were awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

The ceremony took place as the Trump administration announced new science initiatives involving more than $6 billion in commitments from the government, industry, academic institutions and philanthropic organisations.

Trump also referred to the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, an agreement reached with technology leaders the previous week, as he set out his ambitions to keep the United States at the forefront of AI development."

<media:keywords>ruptly</media:keywords>
It's mein birthday, Gerhard! - Putin hears about fmr German chancellor's trip to Moscow AND invites him over

It's mein birthday, Gerhard! - Putin hears about fmr German chancellor's trip to Moscow AND invites him over

"*TO FOLLOW*"
